Lately, I have seen many through the roof style radon pipes leak. This is usually caused by an improper pipe slope, or poorly glued pipe sections.

Check this pipe in the attic frequently to make sure it is not leaking. Look for wet stains on the insulation or on the framing.

This problem is especially found in newer homes.

The best advice is to check your vent pipes. Ensure they are properly fastened and are sending the fumes outdoors especially is you've recently gotten a new roof.

This is a story from Tulsa OK, But can happen anywhere. Check your flue pipe every year.

Tulsa – A new roof for some Tulsans has come with a potentially deadly side effect.

Mark Amarro is a home heating expert who thought he’s seen it all. But this year, he’s noticing something different.

“I’ve been having a lot of problems with vent pipes being disconnected,” Amarro said.

In fact, he’s seen it happen in close to 30 homes in the just the past couple of weeks. He says it is a very alarming problem.

This one was loose and laying on its side venting loose carbon monoxide into the attic here,” Ammaro said, pointing to a pipe that he had recently repaired in a Tulsa attic.

There seems to be one common thread with the repairs. Amarro is seeing it happen in homes that have recently gotten a new roof. Some installers rip the vent cap from the roof decking, causing the vent piping below to separate. It’s a hidden danger that most homeowners probably aren’t aware of.

“A lot of folks keep Christmas ornaments, decorations and stuff in the attic, and if you turn on the furnace and never know it, it doesn’t take much to pass out and not wake up.”

The best advice is to check your vent pipes. Ensure they are properly fastened and are sending the fumes outdoors especially is you’ve recently gotten a new roof.

Since carbon monoxide is often called the silent killer, experts recommend that homeowners also equip themselves with a carbon monoxide detector, just to be safe.

Habitat For Humanity supervisors were “thrilled to have home inspectors help” on the 40-home project in Bethlehem, according to Larry Transue, who organized the July 1 work day and coordinated Pocono-Lehigh Chapter member volunteers.

On a typically hot July day, Pocono-Lehigh Chapter members from Pennsylvania worked on framing two of the houses expected to be completed in early 2010. They included John Gogal, Keystone Inspection Service, Sciota; Mike Stabile, Mike Stabile Home Inspections Inc., Blakeslee; Lawrence Transue, Integrity Inspection Service, West Easton; and Ronald Crescente, AmeriSpec, Blakeslee.

ASHI members John Alastick, Lawrenceville, N.J., and Ron Black and his wife, Katie Black, from Residential Inspections, Macungie, joined volunteers from the chapter.

Transue said the volunteers were eager to help and enjoyed the day despite of the heat. Because of the scale of the project, it will take several years to complete, presenting an ongoing opportunity for home inspectors to continue their service to the community.
